A young novelist tries to reconcile with her partner’s estranged mother after his unexpected death but discovers the real reason he died when a harrowing family secret comes to the fore as his mother’s mental health crumbles.

Telli, an east coast novelist, grapples with the unexpected loss of her partner, Tom. Barely recalling the night he died, except for the interview with the police at the hospital, Telli is overwhelmed by feelings of guilt and withdraws from her family and friends. 

When Anna, Tom’s neurotic single mother, misses his funeral altogether Telli goes to check on her and finds that the dementia she and Tom had suspected has advanced almost overnight. 

As the walls of Anna’s denial crack and crumble and she loses herself in memories of the past, the skeletons of a troubled family dynamic are revealed. Meanwhile, Telli pieces together the days and weeks before Tom’s unusual death. Did his past cause him to take his own life or did something more sinister happen? And was Telli a part of it?
